Hemostat Forceps

A hemostat is a tool that is used by surgeons in almost every surgical procedures and therefore it is a very important medical tool. A hemostat is used in all surgical procedures to control the bleeding of the person undergoing the surgery. It is therefore common to find the incisions lined with hemostats which close blood vessels during the initial stages of a surgery.  All hemostats have handles that are held in place firmly through the use of locking mechanisms. The locking mechanisms usually consists of a series of interlocking teeth found on each handle which allows the user of the hemostat to adjust the tension of the clamps whenever it is necessary. A hemostat is part of all the kits that paramedics carry on their first aid duties and this proves just how important these hemostats are. Hemostats forceps have the same design as an ordinary pair scissors but the adjacent surfaces of a hemostat are flat so that they compress the tissues instead of cutting them like a pair of scissors would.

These hemostat have transverse ridges that intermesh in order to increase the grip on the tissue that is being held by the hemostat. This allows the surgeon performing the surgical operation to increase or decrease the grip of the hemostat when he/she sees it is necessary. Surgical procedures are very delicate and therefore the surgeons need good equipments to help in performing surgeries on patients. The hemostat forcep has proven to be such a tool because many surgeries cannot take place if there is no hemostat involved. Hemostats are the ideal tools for holding sensitive tissues and not for holding needles or any other surgical equipments. The ridges of the hemostat are not meant to hold any needle because needles will definitely swivel and rotate and this might cause other problems during the surgery.

Hemostats are not required to have any shearing action because this will weaken the jaws and the hemostat will no longer have the power to hold tissues firmly making it useless. Hemostats have the same finger rings as the ordinary pair of scissors but the ones on a hemostat are a bit smaller. The handles have to be three to four times longer than the jaws of the hemostat so as to apply high pressure to the tissue that it is being used to hold. The main difference between the hemostat and an ordinary pair of scissors is the ratchet. The ratchet has jaws which can hold a tissue at different levels of pressure and can be adjusted by the surgeon when the need arises. The user does not need to apply any pressure on the hemostat because the jaws interlock and are able to apply the required amount of pressure on a tissue without any problems. Hemostats should also have a good joint and not the normal joint that is used in ordinary scissors. They should have a strong joint which cannot get loose easily. The hemostats are very important tools used in surgeries and the medical world would have problems if this tool would not be existing.

Surgical hemostat is one of the most common tools that are used by surgeons during an operation. Due to the importance of these tools they are used more often in any kind of operation. The function of these tools is to prevent bleeding of the veins or arteries of a patient. They are used by doctors to secure these blood vessels before sutures are applied.

Even though it looks more like a pair of scissors it is actually a clamp that has ratchets. These ratchets are what are used to compress the tissues. These tools have flat surfaces that are rigid enough so that a doctor can get a good grip to the tools as well as provide enough surfaces to clutch and compress the tissues. What make it look more like a pair of scissors are the handles. However, the hemostat and the scissors differ in due to the presence of the ratchet on the surgical hemostat.

The hemostat is so important that no surgery can be done without the tool being present. What’s more, it is even being used by the paramedics. The reason is because of the function it performs during surgery as well as the fact that it is used to stop blood vessels from bleeding out.

The surgical hemostat is one of those medical tools that were invented long before modern medicine came around. Although in the olden days it was not use in securing blood vessels the concept of using an instrument to clamp bleeding veins and arteries so that the wounds could be tied, was pioneered by then. Moreover, the tool that was being used by then was more crude that the modern day surgical hemostat.

Surgical hemostats come in various sizes ranging between five to ten inches long. In addition, they also come in different shapes. The main reason for these differences is because they are made to allow the perfect fit for any size and shape of the individual using it. Since surgery is very important and may be risky due to negligence, they have to fit well in the doctor’s hand to prevent it from slipping each time it is used. It is also possible to use these different types of hemostats depending on the preference that you like or depending on the type of operation that is being done. They are also different shapes of the surgical hemostat. It is possible to find a straight hemostats and a curved hemostat. The use of these tools is almost the same even though it may be put into use depending on the type of surgery being performed.

To use the surgical hemostat one has to slide the thumb and forefinger through the holes in the handle just like you would do with a pair of scissors. Then you can apply pressure on the hemostat by squeezing the device as you let the teeth in the handle to separate. For the hemostats to open in the clamp are you may have to slightly pull the ratchet apart. You can then go ahead to clamp the tissue or blood vessel. To secure the clamp you will have to squeeze the handle of the hemostats with the ratchet teeth.
