A hemostat, which is also referred to as arterial forcep, hemostatic clamp or pean, is a very important tool in almost every surgical process. The tool is used in many occasions in controlling bleeding during surgery. In the initial stages of a surgery procedure, it is common to see a number of hemostats closing different blood vessels waiting for ligation. The hemostats belong to pivot kind of instruments and different hemostats perform a number of different functions depending on how the tip is structured. Now, hemostats operate by use of locking mechanisms which are meant to help a user in adjusting the clamping tension produces by the pliers. Now hemostats are a must have in a first aid box that is used by paramedics and combat medics.

The hemostat bleed clamping concept was first developed by Galen. Even then, after the invention, the concept was forgotten for quite a while and rediscovery was done by Ambroise Pare who was a French surgeon about 1400 years after the first discovery. Ambroise Pare rediscovered the concept in the 16th century calling the clamping instrument Bec de Corbin which can be translated as crow’s beak. With the instrument this surgeon could he could clamp bleeding caused by surgery before using a ligature to secure the bleeding.  There are various types of hemostats of various styles and sizes. Most of  the hemostats are made from stainless steel and their surfaces polished. Sometimes cellulose and gelatin forms that are absorbable are used in place of surgical hemostats. Some of the hemostats include Kocher, Carmalt, Halsted, Kelly, Crile and Thornton.  The hemostat may differ in one way or the other but, all in the main purpose is for surgical procedures. That is to hold together blood vessels to control bleeding before the vessels are sewn together.

Uses of hemostats
Surgical uses. Hemostats are used in performing different surgical procedures. These include surgical male circumcision.  Hemostats that have bead structured tips are used for circumcision and this kind of tool tend to reduce the trauma caused during circumcision. Again, hemostats are used in vasectomy, which is a way of contraception used by men. In laparoscopic surgeries, it is used to hold open skin incisions and finally in closing blood vessels during major surgeries. Hemostats can be used in the cleaning process of optical lenses.

Animal care use. There are situations that make animals especially reptiles that are carnivorous in nature to refuse eating. For instance, carnivorous reptiles will not feed unless the food is appropriate and the temperatures are right. For one to make such animals to feed, he may need to dangle in front the animal’s food with a hemostat.

Food inspection. Sterilized hemostats are required in the food preparation and storage to ensure that the food does not get contaminated. For instance, hemostats are used in testing microbial contamination in meats.Again, hemostats can be used for other different people on other issues other than medical. For instance, they (hemostats) can be used as heat sink in circuit soldering, used as roach clips by cannabis smokers and also be used to remove flies from trout mouths by fishermen.
